How Much Does a Packraft Weigh? Pack Weight and Packed Size Explained
Weight is the reason packrafts exist, and it is the first specification most buyers look at. But the number on the page is only part of the story, because you carry a system, not a hull.
Typical weights by category
Ultralight single: 5 to 6 lbs. Built for paddlers counting every ounce.
Versatile single: 7 to 9 lbs. The most common range, balancing capacity and weight.
Heavy-haul and tandem: 13 to 14 lbs. Two paddlers or serious expedition cargo.
For reference across our own range: the Carver is 5 to 6 lbs, the Badger 7 to 8, the Stance and Element 8 to 9, and the tandem Glacier 13 to 14.
Packed size
A well-rolled packraft compresses to roughly the size of a sleeping bag. That is the benchmark worth remembering, because it is what determines whether the boat rides inside your pack or straps awkwardly to the outside. It also means the boat fits in a carry-on, which is why packrafts travel internationally in a way no other boat does.
The weight you actually carry
The hull is not the whole load. A realistic full kit adds up like this:
Packraft: 5 to 9 lbs for most single boats.
Four-piece packable paddle: 2 to 2.5 lbs.
PFD: 1 to 2 lbs, less for a low-profile inflatable model.
Inflation bag: a few ounces.
Repair kit: a few ounces.
Optional outfitting such as thigh straps and a back band: under a pound combined.
Call it 9 to 14 lbs for a complete single-boat setup. That is the number to plan a backpack around, not the hull weight alone.
Where weight is worth paying for
Every pound saved comes from somewhere: thinner fabric, less reinforcement, or less capacity. An ultralight boat is the right answer for long approaches and light loads. It is the wrong answer if you are hauling a bike, camp gear for a week, or an elk quarter.
The most common regret we hear is not from people who bought a boat a pound heavier than necessary. It is from people who bought the lightest boat available and then found they could not carry what the trip required.
A note on capacity
Load capacity scales with the boat, not just weight. Our range runs from 500 to 600 lbs on the Carver up to 1,000 to 1,100 lbs on the tandem Glacier. Capacity includes you, your gear and your water, so measure honestly before choosing.
