Packraft Repair: How to Find and Patch a Leak in the Field

2 min read

Packrafts are tough, but they are inflatable, and eventually something finds a sharp edge. The good news is that a puncture in a TPU-coated boat is one of the easier field repairs in outdoor gear. Done properly, a bank-side patch will hold for the rest of the trip and often much longer.

Step one: find the leak

Inflate the boat firmly and listen first. A fast leak is usually audible. For anything slower, you need soapy water.

  1. Mix roughly five to ten drops of dish soap per liter of water in a bottle or bag.

  2. Wipe or spray it across the tube, working in sections rather than all at once.

  3. Watch for a growing cluster of fine bubbles. That is your hole.

  4. For very slow micro-leaks, brush on a thicker one-to-one soap-and-water mix, which reveals bubbles the spray will miss.

  5. Mark the spot with a pencil or marker before you rinse.

Check the valve and its seat as well. A surprising share of suspected punctures turn out to be a valve that needs seating or cleaning.

Step two: patch it

Deflate fully and lay the fabric flat. The repair will only hold if the surface is clean and dry, so wipe the area and give it a moment. Alcohol helps if you have it.

  • Tape patches: strong plastic-film tape with waterproof acrylic adhesive bonds very well to TPU-coated fabric and is the fastest field fix. Round the corners of the patch so nothing catches and peels.

  • Aquaseal: repairs tubes, floors, valves and seats, but needs up to eight hours to cure. Best as an overnight repair at camp.

  • Aquaseal UV: cures in seconds under direct sun or a UV pen. Apply it in the shade, then move it into the light.

  • Gorilla tape: use for backing larger tears in tubes and for floors and spray decks. It works best on the uncoated side of the fabric.

Apply firm pressure across the whole patch for a minute or two. Reinflate slowly and check your work with soapy water again before committing to the river.

Step three: make it permanent at home

A field patch is a field patch. Once you are home, clean the area properly, remove any temporary tape, and apply a proper adhesive patch to both the inside and outside of the tear if you can reach it. Let it cure fully before the next trip.

What to carry

Every Go North packraft ships with a repair patch kit. Keep it in the boat, not in the car. Add a small roll of tape and a marker, and you have covered the realistic failure modes for a multi-day trip.

Preventing the problem

Most punctures happen on land, not water: dragging a loaded boat over gravel, setting it down on a stick, or packing it with something sharp inside. Carry the boat rather than dragging it, sweep your launch spot, and be deliberate about what goes into the internal storage chamber.
